Onward! And upward!

Today (5/26) was an extraordinarily difficult, yet completely amazing day.  I am having horrible problems with blog posting, Wi-Fi is slim when the youngsters in the place spend the evening streaming video.....
Please bear with me -

Out of Fao

To a lovely boardwalk, past the beach town of Esposende.

After a bit the boardwalk began to age, then to disappear in places.  Yet we followed the trail we could find.

To the sand...

And more sand.  And wind, lots of wind.

On we went, occasionally wondering why we love these walks.

Then crossing a river and, below, finding an amazing lunch - Brian and Benny ordered the same beef and mushrooms, so they just brought double!

We were refreshed after lunch, and headed for the sand again!

We sometimes wondered if we were in the first ‘Planet of the Apes’ movie, but hadn’t come across the Statue of Liberty yet...
you have to be of a certain age to catch that reference 😏

Finally, we came to a small ferry,

with this very interesting passenger (out for Sunday afternoon with his people),

which took us across the river, toward the church on the mountaintop.

We bought some groceries for our dinner, but we didn’t buy any dried cod....

then rode a funicular up to the hostel at Igreja Santa Luzia.  Sorry no pix of the hostel, four to a room but the bathrooms are like a Hilton, AND there was a washer and dryer - no hand wash and drying line for this group tonight!

The church was not big, but quite lovely.

I lit a candle for my dad.  More impressive than the church were the views from it!  We began today’s walk from the far side of the furthest hill you can see below, about 28km.

We were tired, gritty, windburnt, but pretty full of our accomplishment.

We ate Sunday night dinner of meats and cheese, apples, pears, bread and wine, and then went out to watch the sunset, and each of us knew precisely why we love these walks!
